Before one of my dearest friends, Riley Kubik travels to Calgary to make her dreams come true, I needed to capture her beauty and style before she leaves next week. Riley is everything you would want a friend to be and the embodiment of girl gang chic. Her grace, wisdom and style absolutely floors me. I can't wait to see you take on the world and make a glitter storm, bbg. Here is my interview with Riley (@shadesofkewl)!:
What do you do?:
I spend most of my time working at the moment, as I'm saving up to go back to school to study interior design. I currently work in retail at Drunken Sailor, and as a server/bartender at two other local restaurants. On the side I reupholster furniture, and make kitschy home decor even kitschier using assorted colours of metallic paints and glitter!
Who are your style icons?:
Alexa Chung, Rose McGowan, and Jane Birkin.
What is your favourite decade, regarding fashion?:
Definitely the 60's! it was a pivotal time for feminism in fashion, which was responsible for the birth of the mini skirt! I still try to embody the "gamine" ideals of this decade, because I think tights & a turtleneck can be just as sexy as a full lingerie set.
Where do you do your shopping?:
I love American Apparel for well-made basics, but Top Shop is where I love to splurge on something super chic every once in a while! other than that I try to keep it as local as possible- Drunken Sailor, Silla Designs, and Splurge are a few shops in Lethbridge I'm crazy about. But I do love a good scavenge through a thrift store for cool jackets and dresses!
What was the last thing you bought?:
A vintage denim jacket that I'm getting ready to spruce up with some patches and pins!
What’s the most prominent colour in your wardrobe?:
Definitely black or navy blue! I'm always trying to incorporate more colour...but they're so classic.
What are your fashion must-have basics?:
Red lipstick, definitely a leather jacket, a high quality knit sweater in a neutral colour, black jeans (that make the booty look good) and a white collared shirt.
What is the best piece of fashion advice you’ve ever received?:
Finding your "uniform(s)." not necessarily wearing the exact same outfit everyday, but once you find a look or two that work for you, it's so easy to work within those margins and you can never go wrong.
If you could give one piece of fashion advice what would it be?:
I think people hear "wear whatever you want!" a lot, but seriously...wear whatever the fuck you want. Don't be afraid to stray away from trends, but also don't be afraid to follow them! Find whatever it is that makes you feel the most like yourself and forget the rest.
What is your dream outfit?:
If I could leave the house in only lacy black lingerie and a crown I would...but since I can't, I'm gonna have to say it's the iconic cut-out/beaded dress Jane Birkin wore on the red carpet in the late 60's. (pictured below)
